INSTILL & INSPIRE: The John and Vivian Hewitt Collection of African-American Art tells the fascinating story of how Mr. Hewitt, a medical journalist and freelance writer, and Mrs. Hewitt, a librarian originally from New Castle, PA, formed an outstanding collection of works by nearly two dozen artists. The exhibition also explores the uniquely supportive environment the Hewitt’s created in their home for artists, and offers a kind of case study of the impact of their warm, open-hearted arts philosophy on one particular artist in the collection. Together with community outreach and educational programs, INSTILL & INSPIRE provides an exceptional opportunity for Pittsburghers to see wonderful, thought-provoking works by African American artists and learn about the collection that was formed through the Hewitts' friendships with these artists.
